Drawing & Sketching

Course Overview

The 2-Month Summer Drawing & Sketching Course at DA' ART Institute is an intensive, hands-on program designed for beginners to intermediate-level students from Grade 6 and onward.

This on-campus course guides participants from basic line work and shape construction to advanced shading and perspective techniques. Working with diverse mediums—including graphines, charcoal, ink, and color pencils—students will learn to translate the 3D world onto paper, build structural accuracy, and develop their own unique sketching style under personalized expert guidance.

Course Outline

Drawing and sketching are the foundational building blocks of all visual arts. While sketching allows you to quickly capture a fast idea or gesture, drawing refines those lines into a structured, detailed composition. Together, they train your brain to break down complex objects into basic shapes, understand how light creates volume, and translate the 3D world onto a flat surface.

To build a strong foundation for advanced art, every artist must master three essential pillars: line drawing, shading techniques, and the principles of composition.

  • Line & Shape: Developing hand-eye coordination to control lines and construct objects from basic geometry.

  • Perspective: The technique used to create the illusion of depth, distance, and 3D space on paper.

  • Shading & Form: Using light and shadow—from bright highlights to deep values—to give flat drawings realistic weight and volume.

Develop technical precision by drawing from real-world arrangements. This section focuses on training your eye to accurately capture inanimate objects by mastering composition, light placement, and realistic shading.

  • Proportion & Measurement: Learn the "sighting" technique using your pencil to accurately measure angles, heights, and widths, ensuring your objects sit perfectly in relation to one another.

  • Analyzing Light Sources: Understand how a single light source creates form. You will map out highlights, mid-tones, core shadows, and the cast shadows that anchor your objects to the surface.

  • Material Textures: Discover how to use graphite, charcoal, and color pencils to replicate different surfaces—such as the matte texture of ceramic, the high gloss of glass, or the organic feel of fruit.

Learn the art of capturing human faces with striking accuracy. This section guides you through the structural blueprint of the head, helping you master facial proportions, expressions, and the subtle details that bring a portrait to life.

  • Facial Proportions & Features: Master the standard mapping of the face to accurately place and construct the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears from any angle.

  • Shading & Skin Tones: Use charcoal, graphite, and color pencils to render realistic facial contours, soft skin gradients, and dramatic bone structures.

  • Capturing Expression: Learn how subtle shifts in the brows, eyes, and mouth convey real human emotion and character.

Master the optical rules of depth to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat sheet of paper—an essential skill for architectural and landscape drawing.

  • 1 & 2-Point Perspective: Learn to use horizon lines and vanishing points to draw realistic buildings, interior rooms, and long streets that naturally recede into the distance.

  • Spatial Proportion: Understand how the size of objects scales down accurately as they move further away from the viewer’s eye level.

  • Structural Accuracy: Apply geometric grid systems to build solid, proportionate structures with correct angles and realistic depth.

Broaden your artistic toolkit by exploring how different tools change the texture, mood, and style of your artwork. You will learn to manipulate the unique properties of multiple traditional mediums:

  • Graphite & Ink: Master crisp line work, smooth gradients, and intricate technical details.

  • Charcoal: Experiment with bold, expressive strokes, rich deep blacks, and fluid blending for dramatic contrast.

  • Color Pencils: Learn techniques for vibrant color layering, smooth burnishing, and rendering realistic textures.

Conclude your summer journey by curating and preparing your finest artwork into a professional physical and digital portfolio. This final milestone showcases your technical growth over the 2-month course, proving your readiness for advanced art programs, design school admissions, or independent creative ventures.

  • Artwork Selection & Refinement: Review your progress from week one to the final week, selecting your best still life pieces, perspective drawings, and portrait sketches for final touch-ups.

  • Presentation & Mounting Skills: Learn how to neatly trim, frame, or mount your physical sketches, and understand how to properly document and digitize your artwork for a clean, professional look.
